According to a report by Punch on Monday, May 25, 2026, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the withdrawal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the 2027 governorship race is connected to a political peace arrangement aimed at reducing tensions in Rivers State.
Wike made the remarks on Monday while speaking to journalists after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja.
He explained that the development was part of wider reconciliation efforts involving key political stakeholders working to restore stability in the state’s political environment.
According to Wike, the decision by Governor Fubara to step down from the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress aligns with earlier discussions held during peace negotiations.
He stated that the withdrawal was consistent with understandings reached by political actors who had been involved in efforts to resolve disagreements within Rivers State politics.
Wike noted that the aim of such arrangements was to reduce political tension and prevent further conflict that had affected governance in the state over time.
Governor Fubara recently announced his withdrawal from the governorship primary, explaining that the decision followed consultations with family members, political allies, and close associates.
In a statement titled “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries,” he said the move was made after careful reflection and in consideration of the need to promote peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State.
His announcement came as part of ongoing political developments shaping the future of the state ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
However, Wike maintained that Fubara’s withdrawal was not unexpected, stating that it was in line with earlier agreements reached during reconciliation discussions.
The former Rivers State governor explained that part of the understanding involved the suspension of impeachment threats against Fubara on the condition that he would not pursue a second term in office.
He suggested that the arrangement was designed to ensure political balance and reduce further escalation of disputes within the state’s political structure.
Wike also expressed concern about the governor’s earlier decision to obtain nomination forms for the governorship race, stating that it did not align with the spirit of the peace agreement.
According to him, such actions complicated efforts aimed at maintaining trust and ensuring smooth implementation of the reconciliation process.
He explained that adherence to agreed terms was important in sustaining political stability and avoiding misunderstandings among key stakeholders involved in the negotiations.
He said, “I am not surprised that the governor withdrew. In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form, because agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not go about a second term.”
