Former Governor of Kano State and member of the National Democratic Congress, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared his readiness to serve as running mate to any southern presidential candidate chosen by the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso made the statement during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, May 11, 2026, while responding to questions surrounding the party’s zoning arrangement and the possibility of a joint ticket with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

During the interview, the presenter asked whether, if Peter Obi eventually emerged as the NDC presidential candidate, Kwankwaso’s role would then be that of running mate.

Responding to the question, Kwankwaso said his position had remained consistent from the beginning of the discussions within the party.

“I told you right from the beginning. If the party decides that I should be the running mate of any candidate from the south under the circumstances, I’ll be happy to work together with him,” he said.

The former governor emphasized that party decisions remained supreme and that members were expected to support whatever arrangement was collectively agreed upon.

Kwankwaso was also asked whether he genuinely believed that he and Peter Obi possessed the capacity to revive Nigeria’s economy, reduce poverty and corruption, improve living standards and reposition the country, despite contesting against Obi during the 2023 presidential election.

In response, the former governor expressed confidence in their potential partnership and described it as a strong combination for the country. “What you said is correct,” Kwankwaso stated.

“Personally, I cannot remember any better combination, no matter how much time you are given to find those who can beat us in terms of doing the right thing for this country,” he added.
