According to a report by Punch on Monday, May 11, 2026, former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained that northern political leaders carried out a careful assessment of possible political allies before agreeing on Peter Obi as a key partner in the emerging arrangement aimed at shaping the 2027 presidential political strategy.
He made the disclosure during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, where he discussed how the political alignment between northern leaders and stakeholders from the South-East was formed under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Kwankwaso said the process involved consultations and evaluations of different political figures before a final agreement was reached.
Kwankwaso also dismissed suggestions that there was any hidden rivalry or power struggle between his political camp and that of Obi within the emerging alliance.
He stated that the arrangement was built on mutual understanding and political cooperation rather than competition among principals.
According to him, disagreements in political partnerships often arise when personal interests overshadow collective goals, but he maintained that the current arrangement was structured to avoid such challenges.
He added that political collaboration requires discipline and shared objectives to ensure stability within any alliance.
The former governor further provided insight into how the alliance within the Nigeria Democratic Congress came together following recent political movements involving both himself and Obi.
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in the 2023 general elections, explained that he left the party due to internal disputes before aligning with the new political structure.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, also joined the same platform after exiting his previous political arrangement.
Both politicians formally became members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress on Sunday, May 3, after leaving the African Democratic Congress, which had been experiencing internal challenges.
Kwankwaso also expressed support for the decision by the Nigeria Democratic Congress to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region of the country.
He described the decision as part of efforts aimed at promoting fairness, political balance, and national cohesion.
According to him, zoning arrangements have historically played a role in managing Nigeria’s political diversity and reducing tensions among different regions.
He stated that such decisions are often taken to ensure inclusiveness and to address concerns about equitable representation in national leadership.
He said, “Right from the beginning, this sort of alliance has been in existence. Now we are going back to what Tafawa Balewa did during their time.”
