In a recent interview on Arise TV, ADC chieftain and veteran journalist Dele Momodu commented on the long-term political strategies unfolding within Nigeria’s opposition space ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly involving former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.
During the interview, Momodu stated, “I know that Obi is targeting the 2031 election, and the game has already started.”
He made the remark while discussing ongoing coalition dynamics and the strategic positioning of major opposition figures in anticipation of future electoral cycles.
Momodu argued that many political actors are already thinking beyond 2027, quietly building alliances and preparing structures for long-term influence rather than immediate victory.
According to him, Obi remains a key figure in the opposition landscape whose political calculations may extend beyond the next general election.
He explained that Nigerian politics often involves early positioning, where politicians begin groundwork several years before elections, forming alliances and testing public sentiment ahead of time.
The ADC chieftain also emphasized that opposition politics should not be viewed through a short-term lens, stressing that long-term planning is a critical part of electoral success in Nigeria’s complex political environment.
Momodu further stated that internal debates over zoning and coalition choices are part of this broader strategic game, where different camps are positioning themselves for both 2027 and future elections.
He concluded that political developments within the opposition should be understood as part of a longer political timeline, warning that underestimating such strategies could lead to misinterpretation of current alliances and ambitions.
