In a recent interview on Arise TV, ADC chieftain and veteran journalist Dele Momodu highlighted the political experience of former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi while discussing leadership qualities within Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
During the interview, Momodu stated, “Amaechi: He was Speaker for 8 years, governor for 8 years, and minister for 8 years.”
He made the comment while comparing the records of various opposition figures being mentioned as possible presidential contenders in 2027.
Momodu explained that Amaechi’s political journey spans several decades and includes significant experience in both state and federal governance.
According to him, Amaechi’s years as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly gave him deep legislative exposure before he later governed Rivers State for two terms.
He further noted that Amaechi also served as Minister of Transportation for eight years, making him one of the few politicians in Nigeria with extensive experience across legislative, executive, and federal administrative positions.
The ADC chieftain argued that discussions about leadership should not focus solely on popularity or public excitement but should also consider experience, governance record, and political capacity.
According to Momodu, many experienced politicians within the opposition are often overlooked because political debates have increasingly become driven by emotion and online narratives rather than careful evaluation of credentials.
He added that Nigeria’s political challenges require leaders who understand governance structures and possess long-term administrative experience capable of managing national affairs effectively.
Momodu concluded that opposition parties should remain open to different aspirants and avoid reducing political competition to support for only one candidate, stressing that democratic contests should allow Nigerians to compare records, experience, and leadership qualities before making electoral decisions.
