Former APC chieftain and political strategist, Umar Ardo, has stated that the enduring political influence of former President Muhammadu Buhari continues to shape electoral outcomes across Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano State.
Ardo made the remarks during an appearance on Arise TV’s Arise Prime Time on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, where he discussed the political developments that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the coalition that unseated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election.
Speaking on the influence of Northern political figures within the APC, Ardo referenced former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, while explaining Buhari’s longstanding popularity among voters in the North.
According to him, Buhari’s political strength in Kano State contributed significantly to electoral outcomes over the years.
Ardo claimed that Kwankwaso’s defeat in the 2003 governorship election was largely connected to Buhari’s influence and the loyalty he commanded among his supporters in the region.
He argued that Buhari consistently maintained a strong voter base in Kano despite changes in political alliances and shifting party structures.
“It was on account of Buhari that Kwankwaso lost his governorship election in 2003,” Ardo said during the interview.
He further noted that political calculations in Northern Nigeria are often shaped by influential personalities with deep grassroots support.
According to Ardo, Buhari’s political legacy still affects voter behaviour, alliances, and electoral strategies in the region, even years after leaving office, as parties continue to study the role of long-standing political loyalties in determining election outcomes across the North.
