Convener of the Northern League of Democrats, Umar Ardo, has dismissed claims that former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi was the central figure behind former President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in the 2015 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview aired on Arise News on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Ardo acknowledged that Amaechi played an important role in Buhari’s campaign as Director-General of the presidential campaign organisation.
However, he argued that Amaechi’s contribution was largely focused on logistics and financial support rather than direct electoral influence.
According to Ardo, the decisive political force behind the historic 2015 victory was the alliance between Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose political structures and support bases formed the foundation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Amaechi brought in the logistics and funding but he did not bring in the election votes,” Ardo said during the interview.
He further explained that the coalition responsible for defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 16 years in power had already been firmly established before Amaechi joined the APC.
According to him, the merger that produced the APC and the combined political strength of Buhari and Tinubu across different regions of the country were the major factors that secured victory for the opposition in 2015.
Ardo’s remarks add to ongoing political debates over the contributions of key figures who played roles in the formation and success of the APC during one of Nigeria’s most significant electoral transitions.
The discussion also comes amid renewed political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general election, with several political actors revisiting the events and alliances that shaped previous elections.
