In a recent interview on SYMFONI TV, Yunusa Tanko, a Global Leader of the Obidient Movement, spoke extensively on leadership values, political mobilisation, and the qualities he believes are shaping Nigeria’s evolving democratic space ahead of future elections.
During the interview, Tanko praised the leadership style and political messaging of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing him as a politician whose approach is rooted in service delivery, accountability, and human development.
Tanko stated, “Peter Obi has been campaigning with capacity, competence, character, credibility and compassion.”
He made the remark while highlighting what he described as Obi’s consistent emphasis on governance principles that focus on efficiency in public spending, improvement in education, and prioritisation of human capital development.
According to him, these qualities have continued to resonate strongly with many Nigerians across different regions, particularly young people who are increasingly demanding a shift from traditional political practices to performance-driven leadership.
Tanko explained that the Obidient Movement has grown beyond electoral enthusiasm into a structured political conversation about what leadership should represent in a modern democracy.
He noted that the five qualities he mentioned capacity, competence, character, credibility, and compassion form what he considers the foundation of credible and sustainable leadership in any society seeking progress.
According to him, Nigeria’s political challenges require leaders who not only have the technical ability to govern but also the moral strength to make decisions that prioritise citizens’ welfare over personal or political interests.
Tanko further argued that Peter Obi’s political messaging has consistently focused on reducing waste in governance, improving institutional accountability, and ensuring that public resources are managed in a way that benefits the wider population.
He said this message has helped the Obidient Movement attract attention from a diverse demographic, including students, professionals, and diaspora Nigerians who are concerned about governance outcomes.
Tanko added that leadership credibility is not built overnight but through consistent actions, public engagement, and demonstrable commitment to the values a leader espouses.
He maintained that Obi’s political journey continues to reflect those principles, especially in how he engages with supporters and articulates policy ideas during public appearances and interviews.
The Obidient Movement leader also emphasised that compassion in leadership is often underestimated in politics, noting that empathy plays a crucial role in shaping policies that directly affect citizens’ daily lives.
According to him, leaders who understand the struggles of ordinary people are more likely to implement policies that address poverty, unemployment, and social inequality.
Tanko said the movement is not only focused on electoral competition but also on changing the political culture by promoting leaders who are accountable and people-oriented.
He stressed that the increasing participation of young Nigerians in political discourse is a positive sign for democracy, as it reflects a growing demand for transparency and performance-based governance.
