According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Northern youths under the umbrella of the Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups, have cautioned that Nigeria’s 2027 general election could become the country’s final electoral exercise if the current political situation is allowed to persist.
The warning was issued during a press briefing where the group expressed concerns over developments in the nation’s political and governance landscape, particularly the treatment of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
During the briefing, the coalition demanded the immediate release of El-Rufai, who is currently being held by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The coalition stated that Northern youths should begin to mobilize and unite ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the group, young people in the region must actively participate in the democratic process and use their votes to remove the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power.
It argued that political change can only be achieved through collective action and electoral participation.
Members of the coalition further expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as selective treatment of political figures facing investigations by anti-corruption agencies.
They pointed out that several former governors are currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yet many of them continue to move about freely without any restrictions on their activities.
The group also noted that some of the former governors being investigated have remained politically active despite the allegations against them.
According to the coalition, a number of such individuals are still contesting for elective offices under the platform of the APC, a situation it said has fueled perceptions of inconsistency in the application of justice and accountability.
While reiterating its position, the coalition urged authorities to ensure that all citizens are treated equally regardless of political affiliation or status.
It stressed that maintaining public confidence in democratic institutions and the rule of law is essential for national stability.
The group insisted that actions perceived as unfair could further deepen political tensions and undermine trust in governance.
He said: “If things continue to happen like this in Nigeria, 2027 might be our last attempt to have an election, because if we don’t fight APC the evil in it, we are going to be worse than the military rules.”
