According to a video on Nevon HQ, on Thursday June 11, 2026, a Nigerian man who spent fifteen years in prison has recounted the moment a judge sentenced him to death by hanging in 2016, revealing that the presiding judge concluded the sentence with the words "may your soul rest in perfect peace," a phrase he said he has since come to accept as part of a larger journey that ultimately led to his reformation and release.
Olumuyiwa Ayodeji Adedeji shared the account on the Fire City Podcast on the Nevon HQ platform with host Oseni Rufai, describing the courtroom scene that followed six years of awaiting trial with no complainant appearing in court.
The case was eventually opened when a police officer unknown to Ayodeji appeared as the investigating police officer, and pressure was subsequently mounted on the complainant's manager to also testify.
In his words, Olumuyiwa Ayodeji said, "The judge said, you are thereby sentenced to death by hanging. The judge even said me, you also rest in perfect peace.
"In blessed memory of the judge today because I have it at the back of my mind that after my release I will go and visit, she's a former Chief Justice of Ondo State, because she is one of the tools that God used to refine my life," he said.
Ayodeji revealed that rather than harbour bitterness toward the judge, he had planned to visit her after his release to show her that he had been reformed.
He said he did not view her as a wicked person but as an instrument in his transformation. He was disappointed to learn upon his release that the judge had since passed away.
His mother, who was present in court on the day of sentencing, collapsed from shock. She hit the floor when the verdict was read and later suffered a partial stroke that Ayodeji said she is still recovering from.
He described his mother's reaction as the only moment that truly shook him, saying the judgment itself he had accepted as a consequence of his own actions.
He was transferred to Kirikiri Maximum Prison in September 2016 to begin his time on death row.
