Babachir Lawal has spoken about why he was removed from office as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
According to a report by Daily Trust on Sunday, June 6, 2026, Lawal said he was sacked after a company he no longer owned won and executed a government contract in an agency under him. He said the contract was for consultancy services at the cost of N7.2m.
Lawal said the government did not lose any money from the deal. He said there was no bribe and no money laundering involved in the contract.
He also said he was scandalized over a meager N7.2 million when billions of dollars are stolen from government accounts in a single deal.
In Lawal's words: "In these days when billions of dollars get taken out of government coffers in a single deal, is it not a wonder that an SGF would lose his position and scandalized over a pittance 7.2m Naira and someone is celebrating it?"
