The North is Keeping Quiet, but I Can Assure You Atiku is Going to Make Some Wonderful Showing- Bogu

The President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Bitrus Pogu, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is expected to record notable political support in northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, stressing that the region often votes in line with its own political interests.

Speaking in an interview published by The Sun Nigeria on Sunday, June 6, 2026, Dr. Pogu noted that although northern political conversations currently appear subdued, the region tends to become more politically active as elections draw closer, often recalibrating its position based on perceived fairness and representation at the national level.

He suggested that concerns over how federal appointments and governance benefits are distributed could influence voter sentiment in some northern communities, even though he said the basis for such perceptions is not always clearly defined.

Pogu said, "Now, the north is keeping quiet, but I can assure you that Atiku is going to make some wonderful showings in the region because the north is always the north, and would think of its own rather than someone else.

More so, they feel that Mr. President has favoured his people more than anybody else, and they feel that they are not very well in his government."

Dr. Pogu also pointed out that the Middle Belt and other politically strategic zones outside the dominant power blocs are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 polls.

According to him, these regions have increasingly become decisive battlegrounds for major political parties.

He explained that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) remain the two most dominant political forces in the country, while other parties largely function as smaller platforms that may still affect vote distribution in their respective strongholds.

He added that the NDC is actively working to strengthen its presence in the Middle Belt, describing the region as an important electoral space where both major parties are expected to compete strongly.

He noted that under normal circumstances, the contest between the APC and NDC is likely to be closely contested.

Dr. Pogu also observed that political movements and emerging alliances in the South-West could have an impact on the ruling party’s support base, potentially altering traditional voting patterns in the region.

He concluded that the 2027 elections are shaping up to be a highly competitive race, with shifting regional dynamics and political interests expected to make the outcome less predictable as campaigns intensify.
