According to police sources, the incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. when officers attached to a highway patrol unit were conducting routine security patrols along the busy road.

The officers reportedly spotted a maroon saloon car moving suspiciously and signaled the driver to stop for inspection. However, the driver allegedly ignored the directive and sped off, triggering a high-speed chase.

After several kilometres, the officers managed to intercept the vehicle near Jere Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Realizing they had been cornered, the driver and his passenger reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes on foot, escaping arrest.
A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of two cows, which police suspect had been stolen from a nearby community. The animals had reportedly been tightly tied and loaded inside the saloon car.

Officers also recovered a plastic toy gun from the vehicle. Investigators believe the fake firearm may have been intended to intimidate victims during the alleged theft, although investigations are still ongoing.
