Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to Minister Nyesom Wike on Public Communications and New Media, has accused Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, of leading an armed protest in Ibadan.
In a post on his X handle on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Olayinka stated that VeryDarkMan and some supporters flew into Ibadan and were received at the airport by schoolchildren.
According to the statement, while protesting, the group wielded diggers, cutlasses, knives, and other weapons.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State later received the protesters, addressed them, and praised their efforts.
He wrote, VDM and some people went to Ibadan by air. They were received at Ibadan Airport by school children.
While "protesting", they wielded digger, cutlasses, knife and other weapons. Then, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State received them, addressed them and praised them."
Olayinka added, "If you still don't know on who sponsored the Ibadan trip and the "protest", na you kuku know. May God bring the abducted school children and their teachers home safely."
The protest occurred on June 16, 2026, under the Ratel Movement.
VeryDarkMan mobilized thousands of participants to march through key areas such as Iwo Road in Ibadan.
The demonstration demanded urgent action against insecurity, particularly the abduction of around 39 pupils, some as young as two years old, and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.
Protesters urged both federal and state authorities to intensify rescue operations and combat banditry affecting communities in the region.
The march was largely peaceful until suspected thugs, allegedly armed with guns, stones, and bottles, attempted to disrupt the procession.
In response, members of VeryDarkMan’s group confronted and chased away the attackers.
However, there were allegations that protesters carried cutlasses, machetes, axes, shovels, and diggers during the protest.
Governor Makinde hosted the group at his residence, where he acknowledged the trauma of the abductions, provided updates on security efforts, and reaffirmed commitment to rescuing the victims despite operational challenges.
