Wike Has Been Going Around Boasting That He Is The Leader Of The Judiciary In This Country - Edede

In a recent interview on Channels TV, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Franklyne Edede, Co-convener of the Occupy Federal High Court protest, spoke about the state of Nigeria’s judiciary, opposition politics, and what he described as growing concerns around political influence on democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The discussion focused on judicial independence, political rivalry, and the need for stronger institutional safeguards.

Edede argued that Nigeria’s democracy can only remain stable if the judiciary is seen as fully independent and free from external pressure.

He maintained that public confidence in the courts is essential for resolving political disputes and ensuring fairness in electoral processes.

Speaking during the interview, Edede stated, “Nyesom Wike has been going around boasting that he is the leader of the judiciary in this country.”

He made the remark while expressing concern over what he described as increasing political statements that could undermine public trust in judicial neutrality.

According to Edede, comments attributed to influential political figures should be carefully examined because they may affect how citizens perceive the integrity of state institutions.

He suggested that any perception of control or dominance over the judiciary, whether real or alleged, could weaken democratic accountability.

The activist further emphasized that the judiciary must remain impartial in handling electoral and political disputes, especially as the country moves closer to another election cycle.

He noted that opposition parties and civil society groups rely on judicial fairness to ensure that democratic competition is not compromised.

Edede also warned that rising political tensions require all stakeholders to exercise restraint in public commentary about sensitive institutions. He argued that responsible communication is necessary to prevent unnecessary distrust among citizens.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to defend democratic values by insisting on transparency, institutional independence, and equal treatment for all political actors within the democratic process.
