Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, a House of Representatives aspirant for Nnewi North and Nnewi South under the NDC, Obunike Ohaegbu, has denied claims that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was involved in an alleged demand for N10 million from aspirants.
Ohaegbu made the clarification while responding to allegations raised by a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, who said that the NDC presidential candidate was running what he described as a “criminal enterprise,” arguing that support for the party’s flag bearer amounted to support for such activities.
During the interview, the presenter referenced Okonkwo’s remarks, stating that the ADC chieftain had accused the NDC presidential candidate of operating a criminal enterprise and had cited Ohaegbu’s previous message as evidence to support the allegation.
“And that message he cited is that I said, he asked us to pay 10 million Naira. That’s what I’m talking about. So I’m telling you, Peter Obi never told me to pay 10 million Naira.
I never told Kenneth Okonkwo that Peter Obi in any way told me to pay 10 million Naira,” he said.
The NDC aspirant explained that the individual who allegedly requested the payment was the party’s National Secretary and not the presidential candidate.
“The person who asked me to pay 10 million Naira is the National Secretary. So I also mentioned that the caucus leaders, yes,” he stated.
Ohaegbu further maintained that he was never involved in any meeting where a consensus arrangement was discussed and therefore could not have received any directive from the party’s National Caucus regarding such a payment.
“I have never, I told him, I never had a meeting, any consultation, any meeting at all, where consensus was discussed. So I could never have been in the position to have been told by the National Caucus to pay 10 million,” he said.
