Lawyer and public policy analyst Liborous Oshoma has criticized FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for acting as though President Bola Tinubu had given him a free hand to operate, describing him as almost like a small president.
Speaking on Arise News, Oshoma was asked about the breach involving INEC’s voter data that was unlawfully accessed by Lere Olayinka, an aide to the FCT minister, and whether INEC was responding properly.
He said INEC, as the data controller under Nigeria’s Data Protection Act 2023, must conduct a preliminary investigation to determine how the breach occurred and who was involved.
He explained that after establishing a prima facie case, INEC should hand over its report to security agencies or the Attorney General’s office for prosecution, since the AGF is not tasked with conducting investigations.
Oshoma said the DSS is currently questioning Olayinka and others and that the AGF’s office will review the file and issue a legal opinion on whether there is a case to answer.
He said he wants to believe the process will be followed but lamented that the country has become a place where superhumans are created instead of super institutions, where one man bulldozes his way through.
Oshoma said Wike and his aide Lere Olayinka have displayed high-handedness, urging INEC to prove that no one is above the law and to send the investigation file to the AGF so the law can take its course.
In his words, "But with what we have seen in Nigeria, how we are raising superhumans instead of superinstitutions, how one man can bulldoze everybody, bulldoze his way through. I'm talking about Nyesom Wike now. And Lere Olayinka works with Nyesom Wike."
"Even though we say he's a public officer, he works with Nyesom Wike. And we've seen the high-handedness in some cases of the minister of the FCT.
People have complained. And it's like the president had given him a free hand. He's almost like the small president."
