Speaking at the Foundation’s 37th Annual General Meeting in Lagos on Wednesday, Osinbajo pledged to strengthen efforts in environmental protection and climate action.
He commended the vision of NCF’s founding members, especially President Emeritus, Chief Philip Asiodu, for championing conservation long before climate change became a global issue.
Osinbajo also recognized the late Chief S.L. Edu and other pioneer trustees, noting that their work laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s conservation movement.
“Their foresight deserves our praise and thanks. Without their vision, Nigeria would not have the solid base it has today for climate action,” he said.
The former vice president observed that the impacts of climate change are now obvious in Nigeria through floods and rising temperatures. He added that parts of Europe are currently recording temperatures between 38°C and 41°C, which shows why urgent action is needed.
“We are clearly in the most difficult period yet for climate change,” Osinbajo stated.
He, however, expressed optimism that progress in technology, innovation, and science will help address environmental problems more effectively. He said Nigeria has the capacity to achieve major gains in biodiversity protection and sustainability.
Osinbajo described the NCF as Nigeria’s leading NGO focused on conservation and climate action. He praised the trustees, staff, volunteers, members, and partners for keeping the Foundation’s programs alive over the years.
While accepting the role, he promised to build on past achievements and work closely with all stakeholders.
“I accept this responsibility with deep humility and appreciation. I look forward to working with the Board, management, staff, volunteers, and partners to advance the Foundation’s mission and ensure a healthier environment for future generations,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Chief Asiodu served as President Emeritus of NCF for over 20 years before stepping down at the age of 92.
