During the interview, he discussed his past, family, and spiritual journey. According to Ndume, his mother was a devoted Christian who brought him up and gave him the name Samuel.
The senator asserts that his mother was an ardent Christian who never became an Islam; he was raised in a family where Christianity played a central role.
He described how, as he became older, he decided to become a Muslim and adopt the name Muhammad; he continues to be a practicing Muslim to this day.
As he reflected on his youth, Ndume recalled that he lived with his mum and was known as "Samuel" at that time. To the end of her life, my mum was a devout Christian. I was born Samuel, but I changed my name to Muhammad because I am still a Muslim now.
The senator made the observation that his heritage, which includes direct contact with both Islam and Christianity, gave him a unique viewpoint on the two primary religions practiced in Nigeria. His family's disapproval of his decision to convert was not hinted at in his book, which included the incident he recounted.
