Speaking during an interview reported by Channels Television on Friday, July 10, 2026, Okonkwo explained that his political decisions have always been guided by what he believes is best for Nigeria rather than by personal interests or disagreements.
Recalling his earlier position, Okonkwo said, "To be honest, even when I was agitating for political change, Peter Obi was in my mind." He noted that at the time, he genuinely wanted Obi to succeed and believed he could play a significant role in Nigeria's political future.
However, Okonkwo said his perspective changed after gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with leading the country.
According to him, he came to believe that national leadership requires broader political experience, strategic planning, and a coalition capable of delivering electoral success.
He explained that he had advised Obi to pursue his presidential ambition within a broader political alliance rather than standing alone. Okonkwo maintained that his commitment has always been to support whoever emerges as the consensus candidate in such a coalition.
Reaffirming that position, he said, "I said whoever wins, I will support the person, including him."
