She argued that such a coalition would strengthen the opposition’s chances at the polls, emphasizing that supporting a common presidential candidate does not require political parties to abandon their individual identities, platforms or ideological principles.
According to her, strategic collaboration among opposition parties is necessary if they intend to mount a strong challenge in the next presidential election.
Yesufu made the appeal in a statement shared on her verified X handle on Wednesday, where she urged political leaders and supporters within the opposition to focus on unity rather than division.
She maintained that electoral success in 2027 would not depend on which political party or candidate commands the loudest online presence or the most vocal supporters, but on which political bloc is able to organize itself effectively and present a united front.
She stressed that political strategy and cooperation would be more decisive than public rhetoric.
She further stated that Peter Obi should not be viewed as the candidate of a single political group but as the individual with what she described as the strongest record among those expected to contest the election.
According to Yesufu, rallying behind Obi would represent a strategic political decision rather than an act of submission by any opposition party.
She explained that a united opposition could maximize its electoral strength without requiring member parties to relinquish their structures, identities or core beliefs.
Referring to the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, Yesufu noted that President Bola Tinubu was declared the winner with 36 percent of the total votes cast.
She pointed out that the remaining votes were secured by opposition candidates, arguing that the figures demonstrate the numerical advantage available to opposition parties if they choose to work together.
She maintained that the electoral arithmetic has consistently favoured the opposition and that disunity has remained the major obstacle to translating that advantage into electoral victory.
The co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls Movement also expressed concern over the continued fragmentation among opposition political parties and their supporters.
She lamented that the inability of opposition leaders to build consensus around a common objective has weakened their overall political influence.
Yesufu reiterated that the challenge facing the opposition is not a lack of public support but the absence of coordinated action capable of bringing different political interests together ahead of the 2027 general elections.
