Rotimi Amaechi Said, ‘You Were Abusing Me,’ And I Replied, ‘No, I Did Not Abuse You’ -Momodu

In a recent interview on Nevon HQ, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Dele Momodu, an ADC chieftain, reflected on his relationships with political leaders, emphasizing that genuine friendship should be built on honesty rather than flattery. 

He argued that public office holders need trusted associates who are willing to offer sincere advice instead of constant praise.

Momodu explained that throughout his career as a journalist and public commentator, he has maintained a reputation for expressing his views candidly, even when those opinions are unpopular. According to him, constructive criticism should never be mistaken for personal attacks.

Speaking during the interview, Momodu stated, "Rotimi Amaechi said, 'You were abusing me,' and I replied, 'No, I did not abuse you; I only told you the truth.'" 

He made the remark while recounting a conversation with former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, about the importance of speaking honestly to friends in positions of authority.

According to Momodu, he believes political leaders benefit more from associates who tell them uncomfortable truths than from those who simply agree with every decision they make. 

He maintained that his criticism has always been guided by his desire to see better governance and stronger democratic institutions.

Momodu further argued that many politicians are surrounded by people who hesitate to express opposing views, leaving leaders without honest feedback. He said this culture weakens accountability and prevents meaningful self-assessment among those in public office.

He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to embrace constructive criticism as an essential part of democratic governance, stressing that truthfulness, accountability, and sincerity are necessary qualities for both political leaders and their associates.
