‘The Flooding Was Caused By Blocked Drainage And Poor Waste Disposal, Not The Highway Alone,’ Works Minister David Umahi Explains After Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Was Submerged

David Umahi has explained why sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway experienced flooding, saying blocked drainage channels and poor waste disposal were major factors behind the incident.

Speaking during an inspection of the affected areas, the Minister of Works said the flooding was not caused solely by the highway itself but was worsened by environmental and drainage-related challenges.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, one of the flagship infrastructure projects of President Bola Tinubu's administration, was recently affected by heavy rainfall that left portions of the road under water, making them temporarily inaccessible to motorists.

Addressing the situation, Umahi said large amounts of refuse dumped into drainage channels prevented water from flowing freely during the heavy rains.

"You can see the amount of refuse even on our way. You can see the indiscipline of Nigerians that carry refuse to block drainage channels," the minister said.

According to Umahi, blocked drainage systems caused rainwater to accumulate instead of flowing away, contributing significantly to the flooding witnessed along sections of the highway. Continue Reading The Article By Clicking Here.
