In an interview with Daily Independent on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, has called for respect for democratic principles in Rivers State, stating that the governor should be allowed to govern without interference for the full four-year mandate given to him by the people.
Dr. Theophilus explained that elections are the foundation of democracy. He noted that the people of Rivers State freely chose their governor through the ballot, according to him, that decision should be respected by all political actors, regardless of personal interests or political disagreements.
He stressed that governance should be the main focus at this time, he said constant political pressure and conflicts distract leaders from delivering good governance to the people.
He added that such distractions slow down development and increase tension across the state, he stated that democracy already provides a clear solution for dissatisfaction with leadership.
He explained that if political actors or citizens are unhappy with the governor’s performance, the proper time to express this is during elections, he said the 2027 general election will give Rivers people the opportunity to decide the future of their leadership.
Dr. Theophilus noted that political groups should begin to organize and mobilize support peacefully if they believe they have a better alternative, he said this process should be done through lawful campaigns and engagement with the people, not through actions that destabilize the state.
He warned against what he described as a political witch hunt against the governor.
"They should allow the governor of Rivers State to govern the people of rivers states for the four years mandate given to him.
And when the 2027 election season comes, they should galvanize their leader’s support, if they’re not comfortable and Rivers people are not comfortable with the governor they can speak with their ballots.
Allow the Rivers people that gave him the mandate to vote him out instead of this political witch hunt that is giving serious unrest in Rivers State," he said.
