If It Was An Open Contest, Fubara Wouldn't Come 50th Position Of People Who Wanted To Contest— Worlu

Dr. Gift Worlu, Chairman of Obiakpo Local Government Area in Rivers State, has claimed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara lacked the political weight to emerge governor through an open and competitive process, insisting that party influence, not popularity, secured his rise and now fuels the ongoing crisis in the state.

Worlu said the current tension reflects deep frustration among party stakeholders who feel sidelined after sacrificing their ambitions for Fubara.

Speaking on Channels Television, Worlu said politics revolves around power-sharing and collective investment, not sentiment.

He explained that party leaders and loyalists committed time, resources, and influence to install Fubara with the understanding that governance would reflect collective interests.

According to him, many party members barely knew Fubara before the election but supported him based on the assurance of former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who vouched for his loyalty and administrative experience as Accountant-General of the state.

Worlu stated that several aspirants abandoned their governorship ambitions at the directive of party leadership to allow consensus.

He disclosed that at a critical stage, Fubara himself proposed then-Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu, as a better candidate, citing seniority and hierarchy. Party leaders, however, interpreted Fubara’s withdrawal as humility and loyalty and eventually selected him.

He accused the governor of abandoning those who worked for his emergence, including party leaders, campaign directors, elders, and financiers.

According to Worlu, the current backlash from lawmakers stems from exclusion and broken political agreements, warning that ignoring internal consensus could cost the governor political survival.

In his words, "Before working for the governor, I barely knew him.

I'm a Rivers person just like the governor, but I didn't know him, but we belonged to the same political family under the leadership of the then governor, who is now FCT minister."

"I can tell you that, and the minister himself has echoed this before, that if it was an open contest, the governor would not come 50th position of all the people who wanted to contest that office."
