Fubara: A Minister Was Sacked Because He Received A Gift Of Wristwatch — Gift Worlu

Dr. Gift Worlu, Chairman of Obiakpo LGA in Rivers State, has warned that Governor Siminalayi Fubara exposed members of the State House of Assembly to legal risk by allegedly paying N100,000 into their personal accounts without appropriation, recalling a past case where a minister lost his job over a gift of a wristwatch.

Worlu said the payment raised serious questions of legality and accountability and justified the Assembly’s concern about executive excesses, calling for Fubara’s impeachment.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Worlu said the current impeachment tension in Rivers State did not arise suddenly but stemmed from unresolved issues early in Fubara’s administration.

He explained that while serving as a commissioner, the governor failed to brief the State Executive Council on critical matters, a lapse he described as poor leadership and disregard for due process.

According to Worlu, that failure contributed to the prolonged crisis that eventually led to a state of emergency.

He noted that during the emergency period, party leaders and stakeholders reached agreements aimed at stabilizing governance when democratic institutions were restored.

He said the arrangements included presenting a supplementary budget to cater for the State Assembly, which had been excluded from the budget prepared under the sole administrator, and appointing commissioners to ensure inclusive governance.

He alleged that the governor failed to implement those agreements after returning to office.

He argued that unappropriated payments to lawmakers were unacceptable and potentially dangerous, stressing that public officials had faced severe consequences in the past for far less.

In his words, "You know what happened during this Christmas period. Some monies were paid to the accounts of assembly members, 100,000 naira. And the assembly people have asked, who appropriated this fund?"

"So we'll receive the money, and then tomorrow EFCC will come and ask us how we got that money and all of that. It's an important issue."

"We've seen people go to jail for it. I recall that in this country many years back, a minister was sacked because he received a gift of a wristwatch, you know, and he happens to be a Rivers person anyway."
