“If You Don’t Have a Hausa-Fulani Representative in the 2027 Election, APC Will Have Issues” — Abati

According to report from Daily Post on 27th January 2026, Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Dr. Reuben Abati, has warned that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could face serious political challenges in the 2027 general election if it fails to maintain strong representation from the Hausa-Fulani bloc in its presidential ticket.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Abati argued that Nigeria’s political realities demand careful consideration of regional and ethnic balance, particularly in the North, where voting patterns are often shaped by identity, history, and political awareness.

According to him, ignoring these factors could prove costly for the ruling party.

Abati made the remarks while defending recent comments by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, who suggested that changing Vice President Kashim Shettima could negatively affect the APC’s chances in the North.

He insisted that Musawa’s comments were misunderstood and unfairly criticized, stressing that she merely highlighted the political consequences of altering the existing equation.

According to Abati, the North remains a politically sophisticated region, where voters are keenly aware of representation and inclusion.

He explained that the Hausa-Fulani and Kanuri blocs, in particular, play a crucial role in determining electoral outcomes, and any attempt to sideline them could weaken the APC’s support base.

He further noted that the Tinubu-Shettima ticket was deliberately constructed to reflect political balance and regional strength, a strategy that contributed significantly to the party’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Abati questioned why the same formula should now be discarded ahead of 2027, especially when it has already proven effective.

The former presidential spokesperson also criticized attempts to frame the debate around religious sentiments alone, arguing that political strategy, not emotional reactions, should guide decision-making.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on honest conversations about power-sharing and inclusion, even when such discussions are uncomfortable.

Abati added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must demonstrate consistency and courage by standing by his original choice of running mate.

He warned that frequent changes driven by pressure or fear of backlash could project uncertainty and weaken leadership authority.

He concluded by stating that Nigeria’s political choices must be determined internally, not shaped by external opinions or perceived international pressure.

According to Abati, if the APC fails to recognize the importance of maintaining Hausa-Fulani representation in its 2027 calculations, the party risks internal division and electoral setbacks that could have been avoided through strategic continuity.
