Until an Igbo Man Becomes President, the Wounds of the Civil War Will Not Fully Heal—Chief Nwodo

According to a report by Vanguard News, former Governor of Enugu State and ex–National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo, has said that the wounds of the Nigerian Civil War will not be completely healed until an Igbo man becomes President of Nigeria.

He made the remark while speaking on national unity, inclusion, and the lingering effects of the civil war on the country’s political consciousness.

Nwodo explained that decades after the end of the war, many people from the South-East still feel politically excluded at the highest level of governance.

He noted that the absence of an Igbo president since the return to democratic rule has continued to deepen feelings of marginalisation in the region.

According to him, addressing this imbalance would go a long way in fostering reconciliation and strengthening the nation’s unity.

“Until an Igbo man becomes president, the wounds of the civil war will not fully heal,” Nwodo stated.

He added that true nation-building requires fairness, justice, and a deliberate effort to give every major group a sense of belonging.

Nwodo urged political leaders and parties to prioritise inclusiveness and equity in their calculations, stressing that healing historical grievances is essential for long-term stability and cohesion in Nigeria.
