Coup: Buhari Almost Cried When Recalling How Idiagbon Was Willing To Be Shot Along With Him -Gambari

Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has stated that Buhari often spoke to him about how loyal Vice Admiral Tunde Idiagbon was to him during their time in power from 1983 to 1985

In an interview with Channels Television, Gambari said Buhari told him that when he was overthrown as Head of State in 1985, Idiagbon was in Saudi Arabia.

He said Buhari told him that the King of Saudi Arabia offered Idiagbon the chance to remain there for safety, but Idiagbon refused.

Gambari said Buhari told him that Idiagbon insisted on returning to Nigeria and stated that he was even ready to be tried and shot alongside him (Buhari).

Gambari stated that whenever Buhari spoke about this incident, he almost always had tears in his eyes.

In Gambari's words: "When he offered me the job he was talking to me about the things we did in 1984 and 1985 to the details.

He was talking about Idiagbon, the kind of loyalty he got from him, somebody who a coup met him in Saudi Arabia and he was offered the chance to stay by the king of Saudi Arabia but he said 'No, I am going back to Nigeria because I don't know what they might do to my president, but if they decide to try him and shoot him I want to be tried and shot along with him'.

Whenever Buhari recalled it, and it was not once, it was almost with tears in his eyes"
