Oyegun Recalls Buhari’s Campaign Question That Warned of APC’s Challenges Ahead

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Chairman of the Policy Manifesto Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has shared a reflective account of a moment from Nigeria’s past political campaigns that he believes carries deep lessons for today’s leaders.

Speaking on ARISE News on February 7, 2026, Oyegun recalled an exchange he had with Muhammadu Buhari when Buhari was a presidential candidate and they were campaigning together under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Oyegun, while riding with Buhari during the campaign, they encountered massive crowds filled with excitement and hope.

The overwhelming public support prompted Buhari to ask a critical question: “How are we going to satisfy this crowd?”

For Oyegun, that question revealed the enormous expectations Nigerians had placed on the APC, which promised change after years of dissatisfaction with previous administrations.

Oyegun said he responded by encouraging Buhari to simply do his best and try to restore hope, noting that no government could realistically solve all national problems at once.

Looking back years later, Oyegun described that moment as a warning sign.

In his view, it symbolized the gap between the emotional enthusiasm of the electorate and the preparedness or capacity of political leaders to meet those expectations.

He expressed regret that the optimism of that campaign period eventually turned into widespread disappointment among citizens.

Now playing a key role in shaping the ADC’s policy direction ahead of the 2027 elections, Oyegun uses this reflection to caution Nigeria’s political class.

He stressed that public support is fragile and can quickly fade when promises are not fulfilled.

His comments contribute to ongoing discussions about political accountability, unkept promises, and the lessons opposition parties must learn to avoid repeating past mistakes in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
