A young woman in Delta State was saved by local vigilante members after what was supposed to be an online date allegedly turned into a kidnapping and robbery attempt.

According to The Nation, it was reported that the reports shared online said the woman had been chatting with a man she met on social media and agreed to meet him face-to-face. Instead of a normal meeting, she was reportedly taken to a lonely bush path.

There, the man and another person allegedly tied her to a tree and forced her to give them her banking details.

According to the woman, the suspects were able to move money out of her account before help arrived.

Local vigilantes in the area reportedly stepped in and rescued her. Police are now investigating the case to trace the stolen money and find out if the suspects are part of a larger group that targets people through social media.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the dangers of meeting strangers from online platforms in isolated places.

While she was talking, she said, "I'm Antonia, I'm from Ughelli. I met them online. And they said I should come and meet them here and I came. I told them this place is too far, and that I don't know here.

"It was then the other guy closed my mouth and dragged me here (inside bush) and said that he would kill me if I should say anything. I have been here for over an hour.

"They collected my phone from me and also transferred N100,000. They did not rape me...when they were leaving, they said they were going to carry another of their target."
