In a recent Facebook video posted on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chief, Asari Dokubo, shared insights about his religious journey and the difficulties he has encountered since converting to Islam.
Dokubo mentioned, “Since I embraced Islam on September 18, 1988, or thereabouts, it hasn’t been easy,” as he described the struggles and backlash he faced following his conversion.
He emphasized that his choice to become a Muslim stemmed from his beliefs, despite the social and political challenges that ensued.
He explained that his faith has influenced both his private and public stances over the years, noting that adhering to his religious convictions has sometimes led to misunderstandings, conflict, and controversy.
Dokubo highlighted that in Nigeria, religious identity can be highly sensitive, particularly for those in the public eye. He expressed that balancing faith with activism and political involvement requires resilience and dedication.
The activist urged that challenges should not deter people from practicing their faith. He stated that belief is a personal choice and should not lead to discrimination or exclusion.
In closing, Dokubo called for tolerance and mutual respect among Nigerians of various religions, asserting that peaceful coexistence relies on accepting each other’s beliefs and supporting freedom of faith.
