'What Does It Have to Do With You Americans?' —Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Defends Iran’s Nuclear Rights

According to a tweet on X(formerly Twitter), Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated Tehran’s longstanding position that its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful and civilian purposes, rejecting what he described as unwarranted U.S. interference in Iran’s sovereign affairs.

His remarks follow heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington over nuclear diplomacy, enrichment levels and the scope of negotiations, as both sides grapple with security disagreements and mutual distrust.

Khamenei has consistently argued that Iran’s right to develop nuclear energy under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is legitimate and focused on civilian tasks such as electricity generation, medicine, agriculture, and scientific research.

Western powers, including the U.S., have called for limits on Tehran’s enrichment capacity, citing proliferation risks; Tehran counters that its program does not pursue weapons and is protected by international law.

According to him, “Peaceful nuclear industry is not for war; it is for running the country—for agriculture, for treatment and healthcare, and for everything that depends on energy. This is among the nation’s rights.

What does it have to do with you Americans?” This tweet underscores Iran’s rejection of U.S. demands to constrain its nuclear activities and frames the dispute as undue external meddling in matters Tehran views as internal and legitimate.
