According to a report by Reuters, Donald Trump said he believes the United States should be personally involved in selecting Iran’s next leader following the death of Ali Khamenei, the country’s longtime Supreme Leader.
Speaking in an interview with Axios, Trump acknowledged that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Iranian leader, is widely seen as the most likely successor.
However, he said he considers that outcome unacceptable. “We want to be involved in the process of choosing the person who is going to lead Iran into the future,” Trump said.
Trump also argued that the next Iranian leader must be someone capable of bringing stability to the country. “Khamenei's son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” he said in the interview.
The U.S. president reportedly described Mojtaba Khamenei as a “lightweight” and insisted that Washington should have a role in shaping Iran’s political future.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric with strong ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, is considered one of the most influential figures within the country’s clerical establishment and a potential successor to his father. However, Iranian authorities have not officially announced a new Supreme Leader.
Trump further suggested that allowing a successor who continues the same policies as the previous leadership could lead to renewed conflict in the future.
He also compared the situation to developments in Venezuela, saying he needed to be involved in the leadership transition there as well.
