Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, spoke about the controversy surrounding a search of the residence of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai during a video posted on Sahara TV.
Reacting to reports about items allegedly recovered from the former governor’s residence, Sowore said there was uncertainty about what security agencies actually took during the operation.
According to him, "Nobody, for instance, knows what they took from El-Rufai's house. They said they found some gadgets there that are used in tapping phones; the wife said they only took away bank tokens.
That's what they said, and they said they found a blackberry in El-Rufai's house. You don’t know what they found; you know El-Rufai is also someone who likes drama.”
The issue emerged after investigators searched El-Rufai’s residence as part of an ongoing probe into alleged financial improprieties linked to his time in office.
In court filings, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission reportedly claimed that electronic magnetic equipment capable of tapping conversations was recovered during the search.
However, the former governor’s family strongly denied the allegation, insisting that no phone-tapping devices were found in the house.
They said only old personal mobile phones, flash drives and laptops were taken by investigators during the search.
