Former senator Shehu Sani has shared his view on the strong support former president Muhammadu Buhari received, especially from Northern Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Mic-On Podcast, according to Sani, Buhari enjoyed a rare level of loyalty from his region, where many people saw him as the leader who would solve their problems.
He explained that this support was so strong that many were unwilling to criticise his government, even when facing serious challenges.
Sani pointed out that during Buhari’s time in office, issues like insecurity, poverty, and lack of development affected many parts of the North. However, he believes that these problems were not openly criticised by a large number of people in the region because of their deep loyalty to him.
He described this situation as a kind of regional solidarity, where people stood firmly behind someone they considered their own, regardless of the government’s performance. In his view, this kind of support can make it difficult for leaders to be held accountable.
Sani also compared this type of loyalty to the strong backing some supporters of Peter Obi show today, noting how political followings can sometimes become very emotional.
In his words, "You don't hear people criticising him for insecurity despite our people being slaughtered. You don't hear people in North Criticizing him for poverty despite the fact that the North is the most impoverished part of the country.
You don't hear people in North Criticizing him for underdevelopment, for lack of infrastructure, and for refusing to do what he was supposed to do."
