Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has issued a pointed message to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following renewed political debate triggered by the exit of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the party’s broader opposition alignment.
Keyamo made his remarks in a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, May 7, 2026, where he commented on the growing tension within opposition ranks after Obi reportedly aligned himself with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the next general elections.
The minister advised the ADC leadership to focus on its preferred political direction and consolidate around former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, rather than continue engaging in public criticism of Peter Obi following his recent political movement.
His intervention comes amid heightened reactions from within the ADC and its allied political figures after Obi’s reported decision to exit the African Democratic Congress structure in favour of a new political alignment, a move that has continued to generate debate across the political landscape.
In the aftermath of Obi’s departure, several prominent ADC-linked figures, including Kenneth Okonkwo, Lauretta Onochie, and Senator Dino Melaye, had openly criticised the former Anambra State governor, describing his political trajectory as inconsistent and referring to him as a “political nomad.”
Their remarks added to growing tensions between supporters and critics of the former presidential candidate, with discussions dominating political conversations across media platforms and social networks.
However, Keyamo’s reaction introduced a different tone to the discourse. In a somewhat unexpected position, he appeared to defend Peter Obi’s political choices, suggesting that the former Labour Party candidate is fully aware of his political value and standing within Nigeria’s political space.
He noted that while he ordinarily would not involve himself in disputes within opposition circles, the ongoing exchanges had prompted him to offer clarity on what he believes should be the ADC’s strategic focus going forward.
According to him, rather than continuing debates over Obi’s political decisions, the ADC should concentrate on consolidating its own internal direction and remain aligned with Atiku Abubakar as its preferred political figure.
Keyamo further suggested that the party should allow Peter Obi to chart his own political course without further criticism, implying that continued public exchanges were unnecessary and counterproductive to political strategy.
His comments have since sparked reactions across political platforms, with observers noting the unusual nature of a serving minister commenting on internal opposition dynamics while also offering a defence of a prominent opposition figure.
