Tinubu: He May Not Make Another June 12th Declaration Again As President — Adebayo

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 election, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day address, describing it as a missed opportunity to connect meaningfully with Nigerians and provide accountability for his administration’s performance.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Adebayo said the June 12 speech failed to address the expectations of citizens who were looking for a clear assessment of the government’s achievements and progress toward the democratic ideals associated with the historic date.

According to him, a Democracy Day address should go beyond making promises about the future and instead provide a detailed account of actions already taken while in office.

He argued that Nigerians are more interested in understanding what the administration has accomplished so far rather than hearing broad projections about what may happen in the future.

Adebayo further stated that parts of the president’s speech appeared disconnected and lacked a clear message capable of inspiring confidence among citizens.

He noted that effective leadership requires not only governance but also the ability to communicate sincerely with the people and acknowledge that political authority is derived from them.

The SDP leader emphasized that Nigeria is currently facing numerous economic and social challenges, making transparency and accountability even more important.

He also suggested that future national broadcasts, including Independence Day addresses, should be carefully crafted to reflect the realities confronting ordinary Nigerians.

In a notable remark, Adebayo described Tinubu’s recent Democracy Day speech as potentially his final June 12 address as president, expressing confidence that a different leader could be delivering such a speech in the future.

He maintained that any leader making a major national address should use the opportunity to provide an honest account of their stewardship and demonstrate commitment to democratic values.
