Lai Mohammed, a former minister of information, has stated that late President Muhammadu Buhari once shared a personal story with him about when he was overthrown as Head of State and detained
In an interview on State Affairs Show with Edmund Obilo, Mohammed said Buhari explained that he and his colleagues were unhappy with the state of the country, so they carried out a coup on December 31, 1983, and he became Head of State.
He said Buhari told him that they set up tribunals, jailed many people, and confiscated properties.
Mohammed said Buhari added that about 20 months later, he was overthrown and placed in the same prison where he had earlier detained other people.
He said Buhari stated that the people he jailed were released, their properties were returned, but he remained in detention for 33 months.
In Mohammed's words: "He told us a story. He said, 'My colleagues and I, we were not happy with the state of the nation, we organized a coup and I became the head of state in December 31st 1983.
He said, 'We were so fed up with the state of the nation then that we changed the jurisprudence of the country: Before you were innocent until proven guilty, we changed the law to say you are guilty and it is now for you to prove your innocence. We set up many tribunals and we jailed people and we confiscated properties.
However, 20 months later I was also overthrown, I was put in the same jail that I put people. The people I put in jail were freed, the properties I confiscated were returned to them. But I was in detention for 33 months'"
