Abdulhakeem Adegoke Alawuje, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has spoken about the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said Nigeria has moved beyond outdated political assumptions, and that opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai lack the reach and relevance to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
In a report by THE SUN on Thursday January 15 2026, Alawuje said the political terrain in Nigeria has become more complex, and only leaders with deep-rooted strategy and national appeal can navigate it successfully.
He argued that the 2027 election would be too demanding for El-Rufai and too intricate for Atiku, given the entrenched political forces at play.
Alawuje also recalled that President Tinubu had warned during the 2023 campaign that some individuals had turned public criticism into a business model.
He said this tactic continues to be used by those who lack a clear political direction or grassroots support.
His words, “The 2027 election will be an elephant test, too heavy for Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, given the limits of his political reach, and far too complex for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar considering the entrenched political forces involved.”
