Honourable Enemi George, a lawmaker from Rivers State House of Assembly and the spokesperson, emphasized his academic and professional background amidst recent political tensions in the state.
George shared that he holds a PhD in political science before shifting to law, mentioning that he primarily worked in banking.
He remarked, "I earned a PhD in political science before pursuing my law studies; throughout my career, I was largely involved in banking."
He criticized the approach to certain political interventions, stating, "I've never witnessed such irresponsibility. When the president first intervened, the governor dismissed it as merely a political solution."
George recounted the assembly's involvement with federal authorities during the state of emergency in Rivers State, pointing out that the assembly firmly maintained its position during initial mediation attempts, insisting on clear conditions before agreeing to any resolutions.
In an interview with Channels TV, he further explained the assembly's stance during the first mediation initiative.
"Let me clarify: during the state of emergency, the President sent the Administrator to engage with the House of Assembly.
The assembly members told Ibas—that was the first and only time I interacted with him—that, 'Please relay to the President that we respect him, but if he reinstates Siminalayi Fubara, all 27 of us will resign. Let him manage the state and avoid any issues,'" he said.
George indicated that this message was delivered to the President via Ibas, prompting direct federal involvement as the assembly members were summoned to Abuja for a key discussion aimed at resolving the deadlock.
He described the atmosphere in Abuja upon their arrival for the meeting, noting the tension among lawmakers, particularly when they saw Governor Fubara, which caused many to display visible anger and attempt to exit the venue, highlighting the severity of the disagreement.
He elaborated on the political environment, stressing that the assembly's steadfastness mirrored their dedication to procedural integrity and accountability.
George noted that their actions were influenced by legal considerations and the state's welfare, aimed at preventing unilateral decisions that could worsen conflicts.
